Tasked with learning to use this pre-production Microsoft technology in order to assist in creation and troubleshooting of curriculum, student exercises and troubleshooting guides.  This is a volunteer engagement, sought after for the purpose of increasing my experience in .NET technology.

 

Russell Investment Group, Tacoma WA                                                                                                       2004-present

Software Developer (contract, LOGICALIS)

Analyze, design, code, modify and test business applications and systems.  Simultaneously responsible for a variety of assignments within Russell’s Enterprise Applications Services (EAS), participating in new development, as well as, support, enhancement and maintenance of existing applications and systems.   For new development, analyze work processes to extract business rules and design user interface and functionality.  Develop and enhance applications using VB, VBA, database connectivity with Sybase 11 and SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Analysis Services (MSAS), Excel macros and Access databases. Create support documentation as needed.

  • Assumed responsibility for support and enhancement of legacy systems which provide data processing and reporting services to business units, promptly responding to trouble tickets, providing or facilitating problem resolution.  Work directly with business users, including those in remote and international offices.  Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Microsoft Analysis Services related work within Russell EAS.
  • Major Contributions

1.      Designed and developed MSAS OLAP Cubes for Russell’s London Office for the DataLINK project.  Assisted in development and testing of database file loading system and database processing, involving heterogeneous data sources from multiple vendors.  Primary developer for production migration and support.  Provided data and process analysis to business unit during development and migration phases.  Produced documentation for ongoing support and maintenance.  Serve as SME for technical issues during enhancement and support activities.

2.      Was primary developer supporting Russell’s effort during the Necho7 (an expense reporting system) upgrade.  Provided analysis, code, testing and processes to convert existing data elements from older system for upload into new one.  Provided support for Financial department.

3.      Served as application developer on team responsible for migrating Russell’s Research Database from Sybase to MS SQL, altering Excel macros to interface correctly with the new database and system.

4.      Was primary developer for project involving enhancements to mission-critical Rebates application used by Russell’s London Office.  Provided analysis, code, testing and documentation.  Delivered finished product one-week ahead of deadline.  Continue to provide primary support for Rebates.

5.      Provide cross-training and mentoring to fellow maintenance and support developers for a wide range of Russell products and systems.  Created support documentation and troubleshooting guides for that purpose.

6.      Currently working as sole developer for Client Management Reporting (CMR) data conversion, switching from Sybase data sources to SQL Server.  Involves in-depth data and application analysis, design and coding in VBA and queries for Access. 

7.      An upcoming project will involve bring Russell SQL database objects under source management for the first time.  Involves scripting objects, recompiling with encryption to prevent unmanaged alteration.  Will be responsible for writing developer work instructions for using new system, including use of Visual Studio 2003 database projects for future database enhancement and support.

Senior Software Engineer (1999 – 2004)     

Led development teams producing new applications and/or enhancing existing ones.  Participated in all phases from requirements analysis, design, coding, testing, and documentation. Facilitated problem-solving sessions between stake-holders and developers in cross-divisional teams. 

  • Implemented time-saving procedures and automated processes that increased accuracy and reduced manual intervention for production processes. 
  • Instrumental in achieving initial ISO9001 certification for newly acquired work center.  Created and initiated workflow instructions, procedures, and coding and development standards.
  • Designed, conducted and reported on capacity testing for database applications involving SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Analysis Services, Visual Basic 6.0, ASP and related technologies.

·         Designed, developed, and tested Java desktop application for use by management to review employee work through file filtering and random sampling.  This solo project began with self-paced training in Java, Swing sets, and the use of the Netbeans IDE.  Analyzed work processes to extract business rules and design user interface.  Led development team responsible for integrating this application into the current production system.  Responsible for design, test generation, project documentation, and status reporting. 

·         Designed and coded enhancements for an enterprise web application serving a worldwide customer base, using ASP, DHTML, VBScript, JavaScript, SQL and MDX queries, Visual Basic 6.0.

·         Member of development team responsible for porting a VB 6.0 desktop application to 24/7 web environment, available to our customers worldwide, utilizing ASP, XML, SQL and MDX queries.  Took a leadership role in facilitating team effectiveness by ensuring clear and accurate communication (often translating technical information for non-technical team members), and for monitoring and integrating the efforts of offsite members.  Facilitated negotiations between offsite developers, technology providers and stakeholders, proposed solutions and helped manage changing design and project plan documents. 

·         Designed, developed and tested a web application used by staff to manage customer and project data in SQL Server 2000 databases.   Security and reliability were paramount for this data and end-user account management tool.

·         Designed, developed and tested two specialized Windows desktop applications for use by technical analysts, using Visual Basic 6.0, ActiveX components, and a proprietary database and search engine.  Both applications allow users to review and edit files, search a reference database and incorporate the search results. 

 

Software Engineer (1998 – 1999)

Performed high level analysis and design of software programs and systems.  Created, analyzed, modified and tested programs and systems.   Used industry standard programming techniques to translate requirements and designs into code.  Analyzed and solved problems in existing systems.  Designed, coded and tested multiple modules of a system in a timely manner.  Designed tests, created test data and participated in test execution and evaluation of data.  Provided project documentation and status reporting.

·         Worked on team developing Windows end-user application to replacing MS Access database for the Collection Analysis product group.  Served as liaison to contract programmer, communicated specification changes and defined business rules, performed initial testing, coordinated further testing and gathered test results.  Serving as technical expert, wrote user and technical documentation. 

·         Delivered Access database application project to present data analysis reports for large consortium of libraries within 10 day project deadline.  This project involved the complete redesign of a mainframe based report process delivered on paper.
